We're less than two weeks from opening, and at this point, I'm sure we've got a show. Last night while we were running through the final scene, I completely got lost in the performance. I realized I was just enjoying watching the show. I always love it when that happens in rehearsal.
After completing the staging process, we were free to start playing and experimenting with the performance. We've been working through each scene systematically for the past week or so. My process for this portion is simple. It goes something like this: (1) the actors run through the bare text twice, (2) we spend as much time as is needed to expand and experiment with the scene, (3) we run the scene. I've budgeted as much time as possible for experimentation. With a text like this one, I think it's vital to relax and play. Come to think of it, I don't know of a play that wouldn't benefit from relaxed experimentation.
We finish polishing the show next week. Paper tech is Monday, level set is Wednesday, and cue-to-cue is scheduled for this coming Friday. The technical and first dress rehearsals will follow on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Come see the show!
