Tonight, we choreographed vignettes 6 through 10 and reviewed vignettes 1 through 5. Moving between the vignettes quickly and randomly has become quite a game.
We've begun thinking of The Lesson as having a series of brackets or hierarchies. Michel plays the oppressor who plays the kindly professor. With each strike of the claves, the audience will see a shift from professor to oppressor. In two vignettes (#'s 7 & 11), which occur within other vignettes, the focus shifts to the actor. Here, Michel appears in the space without playing the oppressor who is not playing the professor.
In rehearsal, we are working to clarify a series of simple signs to help clue the audience into which level is in focus. Within the main section, the professor is predominant, but the claves signal the vignettes which break down the professor's artiface leaving the oppressor in focus. Each clave strike sends the focus up one level. In vignettes 7 & 11, to return to the professor, Michel must make the transition from himself to the oppressor and then to the professor.
Below are images from vignettes 6-10.
